Proposed Seals for NASA: 1958
I was searching for interesting material about the early space program at a regional branch of the National Archives a few years back. And I found this: a memo with attachments regarding proposed logos for the country’s new space organization.
The text of the memo said:
July 29, 1958
From: Langley
To: NACA
Subject: Suggested NASA seals
1. At the request of Mr. Chamberlin we are forwarding herewith some proposed seals suitable for use by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Three of the seals are done in color, and of these, two are also done in black and white.
H.J.E. Reid
Director
Along with a bad copy of this memo, I found bad copies of the proposed seals. They are reproduced below.
The first shows the earth encircles by 3 silver orbits against a background of stars. The second uses the Great Seal of the United States. And the third, prophetically, shows Phaethon driving the chariot of the Sun (Apollo!) across the heavens. As you know, none of these three were chosen.
