Mars Lander Is Dead—or Hibernating.

The Mars Phoenix Lander completed its mission—sending back info to determine if organic materials are in Martian soil. But now the lander is dead. For now.

Back From the Dead?

NASA equipped the Phoenix with a “Lazarus mode” which may allow the vehicle to start transmitting again.

If all goes well, the Phoenix will re-charge its batteries and start sending signals after 17 hours of silence. If not, it’s over. In either case, it will stop working permanently soon, certainly in less than a month.

Scientists have not yet analyzed the most recent, and possibly final, transmissions from the spacecraft. We’ll see what they find.
