Dawn to Slingshot Around Mars

The Dawn spacecraft will be whipping around Mars for a gravity-assist this month on its journey to the asteroid belt.

dawn_spacecraftLaunched in September 2007, the NASA-built probe is slated to visit Ceres (the biggest asteroid) and Vesta (the brightest). This is still some years away.

Dawn will arrive at Vesta in August 2011 and at Ceres in February 2015.

The purpose of the mission is to help us better understand the formation and evolution of planets.
