The Assassin Who Proposed Rocket-powered Flight
Nikolai Kibalchich worked as chief technician for a revolutionary group that killed Emperor Alexander II in 1881. And, he was imprisoned for it.
His mark on history—helping to kill the Emperor—for better or worse…was made. But, even as he awaited execution, he wasn’t yet done.
During the 17 days leading up to his execution, Kibalchich made notes and sketches for an idea he had. These notes would remain unknown until uncovered in the Police Department archives by a new communist government in 1917.
The notes and sketches proved to be the earliest know proposal for a solid fuel rocket vehicle to carry passengers. His notes included these words: “What kind of force is applicable to aeronautics? Such force, I believe, is slowly burning explosives.”
