South & North Korea united in failure to launch satellites

Just a few months after North Korea failed to launch a satellite, South Korea yesterday failed to launch a satellite.

The launch, from Naro Space Center, appeared to go well. But when the craft reached space, one of the two fairings covering the satellite failed to drop off. With the extra weight, the satellite probably fell back into the atmosphere and burned up.

South Korean satellite went up, came down.

Launching satellites is hard. We sometimes take it for granted, but even with all our experience, the United States still has failed launches. For example, the Orbiting Carbon Laboratory, launched back in February, ended up in the ocean, instead of orbit.

Unidentified debris that fell from the sky near Darwin, Australia is believed to be from the failed South Korean probe.
