Scientists training for sub-orbital flights
Jack Schmitt got the BIG flight for a scientist. In 1972, flying the final Apollo lunar mission, he got to practice his geology on the moon.
Now, more scientists are getting ready to fly in space and do experiments…this time taking shorter flights on private spaceships. Included in the schedule for the 13 trainees was a ride on a centrifuge. At least one private space company—Virgin Galactic—has discussed the possibility of flying scientists on research flight.
Of course, if these scientists fly on VG’s “SpaceShipTwo”, they’ll need to work fast. The spacecraft spends only about 5 minutes in space on it’s sub-orbital flight.
