Rally for space flight

SaveSpace: A good idea, but a late start.

A group called “SaveSpace” is planning an April 11th rally to rescue the Constellation space program and NASA’s all but canceled plans for an ambitious manned program beyond earth orbit.

At least 3 astronauts—Jon McBride, Bob Springer and Winston Scott—will address the crowd. Also attending: a congressman, a senator and a governor.

Of course, it’s probably already too late. For at least 40 years, we’ve had little active popular support to send people more than a few hundred miles above the planet. Now, the current president is following the lead of all the others—only more so. Some administrations outlined exciting plans for spaceflight but failed to provide the money. As I see it, ending NASA’s manned flight is just a natural (and wrongheaded) finale.

In any case, organizers hope the rally draws 5,000 people.
