In New Mexico: ground broken on commercial spaceport

Construction has begun on the world’s first commercial spaceport, in Sierra County, New Mexico.

Supported by the New Mexico government to the tune of $200 million, the hope is that it will make the state the leader in the emerging industry of commercial spaceflight. Virgin Galactic plans to use the new spaceport as headquarters of its new space tourism business. The developers of the port, Spaceport America, insists that it will not limit usage solely to that company.

The spaceport will feature a huge 10,000 foot runway. And the weather offers about 350 days of sunshine each year—good weather for launches.
