NASA’s proposed nuke-powered moon base
Leaving aside whether or not NASA will get back to the moon anytime soon, the space agency is investigating the possibility of using nuclear power to operate a moon base.
Don’t laugh. Several tests confirm the viability of fission-based power plants. And NASA’s hoping to have a trashcan sized generator that can provide 40 kilowatts of power—about enough to power eight homes on Earth.
There’s still work to be done. NASA plans a test in 2012 to test multiple elements of the technology together in a single (non-nuclear) power plant.
