Iran’s Satellite

iran_satelliteWhen Iran launched a satellite a few days ago, it joined the fairly exclusive club of space-faring nations.

Is an ICBM next?

But this is not necessarily a happy occasion. As long as Iran is launching small, scientific satellites..well, that’s not so bad. But one can’t help but worry that this technological achievement is a stepping stone to the development of powerful ballistic missiles, capable of devastating its neighbors, and possibly attacking countries that are quite far away.

Bigger Dangers

Of course, the Iranian satellite launch exhibits a limited capacity for launching objects—the satellite itself is quite small, in line with the relatively weak launch vehicle. Perhaps a more immediate threat is North Korea, which is reportedly ready to test a true ICBM.

I welcome any and all countries into the peaceful universe of space travel. But the non-peaceful use—well, that would be bad news indeed.

Video of the launch is here.
