Huge field of ice—on the moon!
Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (or Lcross) crashed into the moon a few days back to kick up (NASA hoped) evidence of ice on the moon. Well, they’ve found ice…lots of it!
The impact kicked up at least 24 gallons of water and created a new hole in the moon between 60 and 100 feet across.
What does this mean? Well, one might hope that water on the moon would influence the federal government to invest in returning people to the moon. Hey, with lots of water around, setting up a lunar base becomes considerable simpler. (Ok, it’s STILL hard…but simpler.)
A little perspective here…By “lots of water” we mean that the inside of at least one lunar crater it is wetter than earth’s driest deserts. It’s not exactly a lake. But this is a significant find.
