House votes to fund Ares

Ares is being tested. But will politicians let it fly?

Ares: Not dead yet.

The Ares rocket—NASA’s next generation launcher designed to take people back to the moon and beyond—has received an endorsement from the U.S. House of Representatives. They agreed to fund its continued development…at least for a year.

I’m still dubious about the survival of Ares. The president isn’t too excited about it, and the Senate is very tight with the dollar. Also, the Augustine Commission (and executives from powerful space program contractors) has suggested ditching Ares and using a revised version of the Atlas, or some other existing rocket.

Nonetheless, the ball is now in the Senate’s court. Let’s see what they do.
