Dodging more space debris

ISS threatened by debris...again.

ISS threatened by debris...again.

Last week, the crew of the International Space Station retreated into a Soyuz spacecraft when their orbital home was threatened by a piece of space junk.

Now, there’s a new threat…already.

More dangerous junk

Another bit of space debris is approaching ISS and could collide with it tomorrow morning. The chances are small, but big enough to raise concerns. NASA officials are trying to decide whether or not to nudge the ISS into a different orbit to remove the threat.

Threat to the shuttle

The space shuttle Discovery is also in potential danger. With a possible debris impact, estimates raise danger to the shuttle were raised from 2% up to 8%.

Since a recent collision of two satellites, the amount of errant and dangerous debris in orbit has increased considerably.
